Background
New reading systems and playback devices are increasingly equipped with internet connectivity. This connectivity gives them the opportunity to broadcast and receive annotations, bookmarks, and reading positions (a special kind of bookmarks) from other devices, systems, and users. [ANSI/NISO Z39.86-2005] "establishes a specific XML file format to support bookmark and highlight export and import." Does this format provide enough information to allow connected reading systems and playback devices to share bookmarks, annotations, and reading positions across an intranet or the internet?
