Overview

The Z39.86 Authoring and Interchange (Z39.86-AI) Framework is a means of defining XML markup languages to represent different kinds of information resources, with the intent of producing documents suitable for transformation into different universally accessible formats. It uses a modular, extensible architecture to permit the creation of any number of document models, each custom-tailored for a particular kind of information resource.

The specification also defines a set of common modules, and additionally a catalogue of profiles that are conformant to the specification.

Development of this specification has reached the stage where the Working Group believe it is ready for test use as the final step before presenting to the NISO Board for certification. Your assistance in evaluating the specification for its completeness and usability is consequently requested at this time.

Review Period

Start: Monday, March 28, 2011

End: Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Comments and issues can be submitted at any time during this period, but will not be accepted for consideration in this version after the review period closes.

Evaluation Criteria

All participants are requested to fully review and report on the Z39.86-AI Specification. All technologies, core concepts and features of the specification should be reviewed.

The following additional evaluation criteria are included as guidance on the types of issues the Working Group is looking for feedback on. This list is not intended to be comprehensive or to constrain the issues to consider, but serves as a starting point for assessment.

  • Is the Abstract Document Module clear and complete in its purpose:
    • do the layers present enough granularity?
    • is the purpose of each layer definition clear?
    • do the layer restrictions present any issues?
  • Does the metadata model provide enough richness for documents:
    • is the minimal core metadata sufficient for identifying documents?
    • do the default profile and extension mechanisms provide enough flexibility for adding new grammars?
    • is the metadata record attachment mechanism sufficiently robust?
  • Do any of the core technologies present issues for your organization:
    • XML 1.0 (Fifth Edition) for markup
    • RDFa 1.1 Core for metadata
    • Associating Style Sheets with XML Documents 1.0 (Second Edition) for attaching CSS (and other) style documents
    • RelaxNG/Schematron

The accompanying profiles may also be reviewed as examples of practical implementations of the specifications, but the grammars can, and will, be developed and extended separately from the specification. Any issues relating to the usability of the grammars, or suggested enhancements to them, should also be submitted through the issue tracker.

Individuals and organizations that anticipate creating custom profiles using this specification are encouraged to attempt some level of customization during the review period to ensure that sufficient capabilities exist to do so (whether creating a test driver file, creating new modules and/or adding/modifying components in an existing profile).

The Working Group is also interested in any problems the specification may present when implemented practically (e.g., tool issues, extensibility issues in schema languages, etc.).
