Sidebar Additional text (often short) that is complementary to the main article text. Sidebars are presented within a box and/or outside the area of the main article text.

Some sidebars may contain information that is integral to the meaning/application of the main article text, and are therefore required rather than complementary.

This concept will also be required in the AdvancedBook profile, so mark-up options should be explored in both contexts.
Table of Contents global Could use the same TOC construct from either the SimpleBook or AdvancedBook profile. Whether or not a complex TOC construct is required for Periodicals is yet to be determined.

In Periodicals, a TOC may sometimes be referred to as an "Index", but functions as a TOC for all intents and purposes.

Page number global <pagenum>
Continuation indicator Used when an article begins on one page but continues/ends on another. Frequently seen on front pages of newspapers.

Commonly presented in periodicals as "Continued on page 4" and "From page 1"

Article page number Required to enable the use of continuations described in previous point Article-specific
Running header Section name appearing at the top of each page, acting as a reference point to orient the user within the periodical as they turn pages. Also used in Braille. Global <d:runHead> This concept will also be needed in the Simple and Advanced Book profiles.
News highlight Similar to a sidebar or margin note - boxed and/or highlighted text that stands out from the surrounding article or articles. Draws the eye to an article by highlighting a pertinent quote, summary or question about the topic, and contains a reference to another relevant article or page. global <d:newsHighlight>
Contact info A section in the periodical that contains a range of contact details for readers, eg. subscriptions, letters, classifieds, complaints, etc. global <d:contactInfo>
