Periodicals Vocabulary
Update August 2009: This page is not the most current! Please look at the main vocabularies document.
On April 27/28 (in their respective timezones), Kate and Marisa went over
- the Zed book vocabulary
- the Zed newsfeeds vocabulary (to be renamed "articles vocabulary")
- the periodicals profile table
- the Chicago Manual of Style journals chapter. Although we aren't working on a journals profile just yet, many items apply to periodicals as well.
They marked all the items from these sources that also apply to periodicals and their articles.
What follows is a proposal for refactoring the vocabulary sets, and [What.27s_in_the_Periodicals_Vocabulary | lists of desired terms] for the periodicals profile, each list named for its current source.
Proposal
- Separate these book vocab items out of the book vocabulary and into a separate vocabulary called "text" (or something equally generic). The remaining items in the book vocabulary can be called "book vocabulary", since those items (so far) are only useful for books.
- Remove the "edition" term and rename the current newsfeeds vocabulary as "articles vocabulary"
- Make sure there are no redundancies in these lists
- Go through these CMOS journal items and decide which belong to articles and which belong to periodicals (the publication which contains the articles). Move items around accordingly.
- Go through the periodicals vocab items and decide which belong to articles and which belong to periodicals.
- Add our new items where appropriate

Notes about the current organization
There are 3 up-to-date vocabulary documents in the svn rdf folder: base, periodicals, and book
"Base" has the following groups:
- frontmatter
- asides
- annotations
- structure
- rearmatter
- article (tba)
TODO
- The group "structure" will likely go away as its current properties are redundancies of elements
- newsHighlight is a type of aside
- make sure all roles are unique
- make sure all roles are unique wrt elements
- improve all descriptive text (wikipedia a good resource for this)
- renamed "newsfeeds" to "periodicals" as the distinction is not very great from the perspective of a vocabulary. however: this conflicts with the current build process and existence of a "newsfeeds" profile.
- take vocab-specific styles out of util/xrd.css and put somewhere appropriate
