Discussion

The Material Exchange Format (MXF) is a packaging format for professional video and audio media. It is defined by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), a member of ANSI, and is most useful for interchange of media between different professional production systems. As such, it is not intended as a distribution format to end users. It is an open standard, although copyrighted and must be purchased from the SMPTE.

A container holds content ("essences"), various metadata about the relationships between content, and metadata describing the elements in the container.
