TAR
- TAR file format - concatenation of files
- Header / file
- Unzipping a file from a tar.gz is more expensive than from a zip
Review
- The need for container?
- NLS pilot / Bookshare need file that can be downloaded
- Concern about overall size - e.g. 1GB files
- It's about downloading, user management of collection, etc
- Unique extension is useful
- Comparison to .epub etc
- Perhaps not useful for hardware
- PC is used to pre-expand the archive prior to hardware player receiving it - should we continue with that assumption?
Streaming / DAISY Online
- Is DAISY online compatible with containers?
- DAISY Online defined in terms of resources / byte ranges
- "Request byte 1000 to 2000 of a given resource"
- Haven't thought about that in terms of containers
- Compression would be a problem in terms of streaming the container
- At bookshare, resources are kept on disk, container is built at download time
ZIP
- Relatively cheap to scan, assuming you have the whole file
- Variance in versions
- Wide adoption
RAR
- Nick will research
- Proprietary?
- Does it handle splitting the archive up better than zip does?
Next meeting
- Container with useful information in the header would be the ideal for progressive download / streaming
- Is it acceptable for our committee to say "there isn't a container which meets all criteria?"
- Begin writeup of results
- Jan 14th - next meeting
