DAISY/NISO Standard - Structure Guidelines

Structure Guidelines

These Guidelines provide information on the correct usage and application of DAISY XML (the DTBook XML element set) in the creation of DAISY publications. The elements and their relationships are defined, and examples of correct markup are provided.

Updated for DAISY 3

The 2008 revision of the Guidelines includes two new main sections (Poetry and Mathematics), and an Index of Elements (an alphabetical listing of the DTBook elements with each element linked to the point in the Guidelines where the element is explained). In addition, the 2008 revision contains page example images with corresponding markup examples. Another major change in the DAISY 3 Structure Guidelines is the inclusion of information about NIMAS (National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard) markup. NIMAS is the required electronic format in the U.S. for textbook publishers which produce K-12 textbooks. The NIMAS Standard is a minimum required set of elements adopted from the DAISY Standard and is conformant to the DTBook DTD, upon which the DAISY Standard is based.

Superseded Version

The DAISY 3 Structure Guidelines replace the version released in 2005. Archives of the 2005 DAISY Structure Guidelines are for reference purposes only.
