Agenda

The agenda was distributed to the Advisory Committee's list on April 05, 2005. There were no amendments in advance of the call.

There were no additions to the proposed agenda.

Confirmation of Date and Time for Next Call

Gk proposed that the next call be held on May 04, 2005.

Touch Graphics

Steve Landau, from Touch Graphics, was a guest on the call today. He talked for a few minutes about Touch Graphics and their plans for integrating their system with a PC DAISY player.

Touch Graphics' system uses a tactile hardware device, which is an off-the-shelf touch screen, mounted in a metal frame that is then used with drawing sheets (these render the image). User can interact with the pictures. The device has a standard interface: 4-way arrows and a select button. Applications include a world atlas, games, and courseware curricula. The new project is to develop a tie-in to daisy formatted text. A reader can navigate through the text material via the device's standard left/right arrow keys, and adjust granularity with the up/down keys. At certain points of the presentation, the user is directed to move their attention to the main screen and interact with an image.

NASA has commissioned a book called "Touch the Sun". Also, a modular extension proposal is coming up from Touch Graphics.

Some discussion follows.

Touch Graphics is still looking for consultant to help with a 6 month feasibility study. Their next two project phases involve a mock-up and a modular extension proposal.

Steve leaves the call.

API Meeting

Dates

George shares an email from Hiroshi about having the DAISY API meeting in Tokyo. The schedule is as follows:

Participants

George reports that Hiroshi anticipates that the following people would participate:

The group notes that James and David probably can't come.

Logistics

Hiroshi has booked 20 hotel rooms. The group needs more info about booking the Urakawa part of the trip - flights, hotel, staying in sync.

George mentions that we're going to have to get together separately to plan the meeting agenda.

Markus to James: should we hook James in through an IRC connection during the meeting? For example, something like W3C's live IRC notes could be used. However, the time difference may be too great for this to be practical.

Announcement

Tom McLaughlin announces he is leaving NLS and will no longer be part of the Z3986 committee.

ANSI and NISO

Voting from ANSI closes on April 18th. NISO is expected to announce the new ANSI-approved standard during the first week of May.

NISO is considering a change of the maintenance agency. They've approached DAISY to be the maintenance agency for the standard. George approached the board about this. There is a lot of favorable interest.

Thomas asks if this affects our NISO-approved status for future releases. James and George both say no.

NISO has not yet had an international organization as the maintenance agency. But, they see DAISY and NLS as their only choices. So, DAISY probably has to join NISO. The only downsides mentioned today were website and namespace issues. Regarding namespaces, Werner mentions DOIs (Document Object Identifiers -- see his email later on today for details)

What about Maintaining 2002 as an active standard? NISO's perspective is to freeze it in its current state. Thomas asks why does NLS want to keep 2002 -- Neil's response is that the tools update would be too costly. Thomas wonders about the NLS timeline for future version adoption. George says we can refer to the minutes from the last conference call which present NLS's decision to use 2002 and has no other plans at this time.

George asks if anyone sees a problem with DAISY becoming the maintenance agency. No one does, and so George will, unless he hears differently from Elsebeth, make the moves to go forward.

Modular Extensions

Recently, Werner sent a charter proposal for a WG. George mentions we had said that the Modular Extensions don't need to be blessed by the committee. But people would like our advice. No one sees anything wrong with it. There will be an announcement soon to tech-dev.
