Requirement Submission: support video as content type

(R41) Title: support video as content type

Description:

DAISY currently supports audio, text, and static images as content types. Certain disability groups would benefit greatly from the inclusion of video as a content type. Note: its necessary that video could either be the main content of the presentation (driving the timeline, such as audio does today), or be inlined as a secondary (non-master) content type.

Rationale:

Learning and cognitive disabilities are examples of disabilities for which video would greatly enhance the usability and efficacy of the DAISY standard.

Comment from Jennifer Sutton
Implementation of video in DAISY must be able to support audio description as well as both open and/or closed captions.

Comment from Miriam Nes
I believe the possibility adding video to DAISY would be very benificial to several groups: It would definetly suit the common student -including non-disabled students, students with reading- and writing difficulties, foreign language students and student with consentration issues like AD/HD etc., with audio description visually impaired would enjoy the media, and the suggestion should be linked to the requirement: 'Video in DAISY in order to play back synchronised text and Sign Language' etc. Be aware however of the danger of cluttering the user interface and offering TO MANY features to our users. This is the main responsibility of the playback device/SW producers, but is also linked to the level of feature detail in the standard specification. Thus, one could perhaps attempt to find the simplest solution for adding/playing video and related audio tracks, leaving the decision of suitable content and features in the hands of the producers…
