Prerequisites
- .NET Framework: please choose .NET 4.0 or .NET 3.5 SP1 (for best performance and stability, we recommend the newer version)
- DirectX 9: download the Microsoft DirectX runtime installer directly from Microsoft servers.
Recommended Extras
- The Obi project import feature is based on XSLT2, so the Saxon.NET "home edition" libraries must be installed separately.
- Microsoft released a .NET patch that fixes performance issues with UI-Automation, which should greatly improve the experience when using a screen-reader.
- Windows XP and Vista users are advised to install the optional "Windows Automation API" pack, in order to fix various performance issues. This is not necessary on Windows 7 or when running .NET 4.0.
Install and launch
Once the above prerequisites are installed, you can launch Tobi by clicking on one of the 2 links below (.NET v3 or v4). We recommend installing the newest version, as it offers the best performance and fixes a number of bugs. Note: we will continue to support the .NET 3 version, for users who cannot or do not want to install the latest Microsoft .NET Framework.
Notes about ClickOnce
Tobi is deployed using automatic and incremental online updates. The first time the application is installed, there is an initial 9MB download (not counting the one-off pre-requisites like the .NET framework and DirectX, providing they don't exist already on your computer) From then on, each time the application starts it checks with a DAISY Consortium server for a new version (see "privacy statement" below). Subsequent updates are incremental, so the download size normally doesn't exceed 1MB.
Thanks to this effective mechanism, bug-fixes and feature-upgrades can be released frequently, without requiring extra effort on your part. We plan to publish application updates several times a month.
Update an existing installation
- Run Tobi from your desktop shortcut or from the Windows "Start Menu" ("DAISY Consortium" submenu). You will be prompted by a "ClickOnce" dialog that a new version is available, which if you agree will be downloaded and installed automatically. Note: if you skip this step, you will not be prompted at the next application startup, so you must use the method below to update:
- Click on one of the links in the above "Install and launch" section, depending on which version you installed in the first place. The ClickOnce dialog will be shown and the application update will be installed automatically.
No-install, no-updates
Machines running behind restrictive internet firewalls might experience issues with Tobi's ClickOnce application deployment and online updates. If that is the case, you may download a ZIP archive of the entire application, then simply unzip in a disc location of your own choice, and run the Tobi executable from the supplied directory (e.g. "my_folder\Tobi_NET3_1.6.0.0\Tobi_NET3.exe"). Online updates are deactivated when using this method, and the application ZIP archive may be behind the latest version by a few increments.

Privacy information
- For online updates to function, Tobi contacts a server (http://data.daisy.org) each time the application starts to check if a new version is available.
- Basic operating system information (similar to a web-browser "user-agent" string) is passed onto the server along with the client IP address and a timestamp.
- This information is kept private by the DAISY Consortium, and used to compute anonymous usage statistics.
- This is an opt-out feature, which can be deactivated easily in the application preferences.
