Why wiki?
History
A wiki (Hawaiian for quick) is at its most basic a website that allows any user to create, add, remove or edit content and pages. The ease in which users can create and change content makes a wiki an effective technology for capturing and sharing information collaboratively.
Benefits
Wikis provide many profound benefits to users. The most obvious benefit
is much easier, efficient and
productive sharing and collaboration of information. Because so little overhead
is expended while trying
to access information, users can spend much more time on sharing, collaborating
and working on the
information.
A survey of corporate wiki users by ACM bears this out:
- Information was of immediate relevance 81%
- Work is easier by keeping updated 75%
- Disseminating knowledge is easier 71%
- Increase collaboration efficiency 63%
- Increase knowledge reuse 69%
