Transition to Inclusive EPUB 3 eco System (TIES)

Nature of activity: Chartered Project

Brief introduction

DAISY Consortium’s experts have led the ground breaking advancement of embedding accessibility features in the main stream EPUB 3 specifications. This advancement has opened tremendous opportunities for inclusive publishing, and has the potential to lead us to an era in which all the published materials are born accessible.

But at this point of time, the DAISY consortium finds itself at cross roads. On one hand our experts are leading ground breaking advancements in accessible publishing, on the other hand our members & their patrons are continuing with the existing DAISY technology on which they have invested many years, and some are even satisfied with the audio only production using the DAISY 2.02 specifications, quite isolated from the rapidly changing main stream digital publishing environment.

The need for integration with the main stream standards & technologies is very well recognized across the DAISY membership, but it raises many practical questions in the minds of not only the production managers who are expecting guidance, but also the business heads of the member organizations who need to define the new business strategies for coming years. Some of the questions asked are:

·         How can they migrate their large production system built around DAISY 3/2.02 production to EPUB 3 production?

·         How can we ensure development of robust EPUB 3 production environments?

·         When is the right time to start the process of up gradation, what would be the switching cost & how long will it take?

·         What benefit will it provide from a business point of view?

·         What benefit will it provide to their patrons?

·         What will be the switching cost, the cost of EPUB 3 reading systems & adjustment time for their patrons?

 And so on. ..

The Transition to Inclusive EPUB 3 eco system project intends to answer such critical questions by bringing the experts from our members together, and developing the path for migration to EPUB 3 eco system.

Furthermore, the production systems analysis undertaken by TIES will help in setting priorities for the feature list for the DAISY Consortium’s open source tools, Pipeline 2, Tobi & Obi, and will also help in determination of the priorities of relevant main stream projects like EPUB preflight & Readium.

Outline of the plan for 2014-15

The driving force behind integration of the specifications for the main stream publishing & that for specialised DAISY publishing was to accelerate the elimination of the book famine for print-disabled persons. The core concept is to built in an inclusive publishing system in which main stream publishers & DAISY producers collaborate to provide accessible content in much more quantity & quality to print-disabled.

The project roadmap is formulated to facilitate the migration of DAISY members to EPUB 3 production systems while developing inclusive publishing system. The roadmap follows the following 3 parallel dimensions.

a)        Up gradation of production systems

·       In first phase, identify and involve the members which are “proactively” exploring ways to migrate to the EPUB 3 production system. Collectively identify the requirements for accessible EPUB 3 production & Braille production, and establish collaborations with e-publishing standards working groups for addressing the identified requirements. Thereafter develop the early EPUB 3 production systems with the proactive members.

·       In second phase upgrade the production systems of proactive members to work with source files obtained from publishers.

·       In third stage, document the production processes based on the source files, share it with DAISY membership to encourage other members to upgrade to EPUB 3 production & develop the strategies for training the members for up gradation.

b)        Publishers relationship

Facilitate establishment of relationship with publishers for the following objectives:

·       Acquiring appropriate source files according to specified schema.

·       Collaborations between DAISY members & publishers for enabling publishers to produce publications with in-built accessibility. Collaborations may include educating the publishers, providing content processing services to the publishers etc.

c)         Consumption (reading systems)

Ensure availability of EPUB reading systems providing great experience with eyes, ears & fingers. The following two directions can be followed:

·       Members contribute to open source reading systems like Readium web browser player & Readium SDK

·       Encourage technology developers to develop accessible reading systems that provide great reading experience with eyes, ears & fingers. DAISY Consortium’s reading system screening methodology is an effective tool for this purpose.

Milestones or priorities
