The Braille in DAISY Working Group aims to improve the efficiency of braille print production from DTBook by:
- identifying and documenting the editing requirements of braille
- providing a vocabulary for braille editing in DTBook
- creating a printer independent, non-proprietary and universal "embosser ready" braille format
- providing a framework for, and a basic implementation of, a fully automated conversion between DTBook (including the braille editing vocabulary) and the "embosser ready" braille format

The Braille in DAISY project charter has now been approved by the Board and it is time to start working. The project will be divided into two groups:
- The editing requirements and vocabulary group
- The print format group and conversion software group
The purpose of the editing requirements and vocabulary group is to find the editing requirements for DTBook as a braille production source format and to translate these into a workable solution. This group should consist of people with good knowledge of braille production (preferable from several different countries) as well as people who are able to categorise and express the requirements in a technically relevant manner.
The purpose of the print format and conversion software group is to define the braille print format and then design and create an automatic DTBook to braille conversion. The aim here is to produce braille of very high quality, in accordance with user requirements. The conversion will be created for the Daisy Pipeline using Java. This group should consist of people with Java and/or braille printer experience.
Participation in both groups is appreciated. Participation will involve extensive e-mail communication, a few conference calls and possibly a face to face meeting. Both groups will start working as soon as the call for participation closes. It is also possible to remain on or join the list without participating in these groups, e.g. to monitor development.
