DAISY / NIMAS Math Guidelines Updated and Published Online

The Department of Education updated their Math guidelines for NIMAS publisher files. The dear colleague" letter from the US Department of Education recommended that when a state or local school district requests content containing math from publishers, they should require that the math be encoded using MathML 3 to maximize accessibility.

Publishers need to guarantee that all of their materials are in the NIMAS format, a national standard for K-12 textbook accessibility that aligns with the DAISY standard. The new math guidelines are part of general guidelines for authoring DAISY books. Most publishers already meet the non-math parts of the guidelines, the new additions should help publishers more smoothly transition towards making math in their textbooks and supplemental material accessible. Design Science has updated the MathFlow set of tools to MathML 3 so users can utilize these tools to implement the guidelines. More information is provided on the Design Science blog.
