Workshop in Bangladesh to Guarantee Information Access for People with Print Disabilities: DAISY for All
Bangladesh Telecentre Network (BTN) in association with the organization Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), organized a workshop with a goal to introduce different stakeholders to Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) November 18th, 2009. Mr. Mahmud Hasan, Chief Operating Officer for Bangladesh Telecentre Network (BTN), mentioned in his inauguration speech that the time has come to raise the voice for the rights of Bangladeshi people and their access to information. Bangladesh is a densely populated country, but about 50% of its population are illiterate and 10% of these people are disabled. By ignoring this large number of people, Bangladesh will not become a digital country. Bangladesh Telecentre Network (BTN), a national network with 63 members around the country, can be a facilitator in this process and DAISY can help preserve indigenous people's knowledge, culture and customs. Mr. Vashkar Vattacharjee, Program Officer for Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), Focal Point for the DAISY Consortium's Chapter in Bangladesh, addressed different issues of information access in Bangladesh. More information is available on the YPSA website.
