United Kingdom

The Open University (OU) is incorporated by Royal Charter (RC 000391), an exempt charity in England and Wales and a charity registered in Scotland (SC 038302) and is the United Kingdom's only university dedicated to educational distance learning.

Since its inception, the OU has been at the forefront of technological innovations that enable students with a range of disabilities to access high-quality university education. The OU's Disabled Student Services (DSS) department is based at the OU main campus in Milton Keynes with 40 staff members supporting around 10,000 disabled students each year. DSS operates an Audio Recording Centre in Milton Keynes with 6 recording booths and over 200 volunteer readers.

We are currently undertaking a three year project, which began in March 2007, to investigate, create and distribute digital talking books (DTBs) from OU course materials by utilizing DAISY technology. Please visit our Web site for further information and to see how the Digital Audio Project is progressing.
