The National Council for the Blind Malaysia (NCBM) was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1985 as an umbrella body to coordinate the activities/programmes of its five member-organizations in avoiding dupplication and encouraging healthy competition. Its objective includes the introduction and the progressive improvement of policies and implementation of services governing the education, rehabilitation, employment and general welfare of the blind and prevention of blindness in Malaysia. The Council performs its duties and responsibilities through various committees which are set up with representation from member-organizations.
As a new project in Malaysia, the implementation of DAISY in Malaysia is entrusted to NCBM for a three-year implementation with participation from selected member-organizations. We plan to record new titles, especially in the Malay language. The main emphasis will be educational materials, and the target group shall be students. We hope to purchase English titles from other organizations which have already produced them.
