The Hong Kong Society for the Blind was founded in 1956 and has become the principal, government subsidised, voluntary organisation in Hong Kong that provides comprehensive services for the blind and visually impaired population. With a staff of nearly 500, the Society provides rehabilitation, braille and talking book production, library, adaptive technology, children, elderly, opthalmology, career support and development and environmental access consultancy services. The Communication Department of the Society operates a braille and talking book library and talking book production studios, among other cultural services. The Society joined the DAISY Consortium as an associate member in 1998. LP Studio/Pro is being used for the production of digital talking books, which are also duplicated on conventional compact cassettes, as they are still widely in use.
