(see above for one of them)

If you are using the xml, aka Daisy 3 (also known as Ansi/Niso z39.86) fileset, then the different language sections should be marked up with their prospective language tags and the various TTS's will detect this and react accordingly.

It you use Daisy 2.02 then the above is only what I would like to call a theoretical option.

Therefore:

Depending on the authoring tool, you can mark certain sections (i.e. those whose language doesn't accord with the TTS) as 'not to be recorded' therefore keeping that section as 'text only, no audio'. Once that's done, you declare the parts just TTS'd as having no audio (although in fact, they do), and revoke that command for those sections that you previously declared as having no audio and let TTS of the second language have a go at things.

If your authoring tool doesn't have that feature, then there is always the tedious route: copy all sections of one language, TTS those externally, do the same with the other language and afterwards copy/paste/import the result(whatever your authoring tool allowes) into the original Daisy full-text.

And yes, validate afterwards...

As you can see, what I'm really saying is: with what tool and fileset are you attempting this?

Hope this wasn't too disillusioning
Olaf

Read the main topic related to this post
Thu Aug 21, 2008 11:51 pm http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=87#p145 Plugin Loaded But only saves don't get Info Page http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=78#p142

by Paul Wood (Posted Thu Aug 14, 2008 4:52 pm)

Yeah, Sorry!

Vista Business SP1 with Office 2003 after uninstalling Office 2007 Trial. romain.deltour (Posted Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:36 am)

I recently posted a comment on Lon Thornburg's blog to describe an basic overview of the different DAISY standards and file sets, and what are the files at stake in the MS Word to DAISY conversion using MS "Save as DAISY XML" and the Pipeline.

Here's a copy of this comment:

1. DAISY Standards

There are two main versions of the DAISY standard: the DAISY 2.02, and DAISY 3 (officially ANSI/NISO Z39.86).

Each of these specifications describes what is a Digital Talking Book (DTB), which is in both case composed of different files.

To make it simple, a DAISY 2.02 full-audio, full-text book is composed of:

the navigation control center document (ncc.html)

the text content document (.html)

a set of audio files (wav, mp3)

a set of SMIL files (to synchronize the different media, text and audio)

A DAISY 3 full-audio, full-text book is composed of:

a DTB package file (.opf), which contains metadata and the list of the other files

a navigation control file (.ncx), basically the table of content

a DTBook file (.xml) which contains the textual content

a set of audio files (wav, mp3)

a set of SMIL files (to synchronize the different media, text and audio)

As you've seen, some players accept a mere DTBook xml file: they use advanced conversion technique and speech synthesis to make a full DTB out of this xml textual content.
Others require a fully built DTB though. DAISY 2.02 players usually expect the ncc.html, while DAISY 3 players will usually expect the .opf file.

2. MS Add-In

The MS DAISY Translator, aka MS "Save as DAISY XML" converts a Word document in a DTBook file. It doesn't produce a full Digital Talking Book yet. That's why this output is only readable in some of the players out there.

The solution is either to use a player that will play a DTBook XML directly using speech synthesis, or to use a conversion tool to make a full DTB out of the DTBook XML file.

At the time of this writing, the ability to create a full DTB is planned for a next version of the Word Add-In.

3. Pipeline

To create a DTB from Word with the Pipeline, you have two options:

Use the built in Word 2003 XML to DTBook converter to produce the DTBook, then use Pipeline Narrator to produce DTBs from the DTBook.

Use the MS "Save as DAISY XML" Add-In to produce the DTBook xml, then use the Pipeline Narrator to produce DTBs from the DTBook.

Note that the Narrator will create 3 books: a DAISY 2.02 book, a DAISY 3 book with wav-encoded audio, and a DAISY 3 book with mp3-encoded audio.
You should be able to read at least one of these DTB in any DAISY player you have, and as far as I know AMIS 3 (in beta version at the time of this writing) supports both DAISY 2.02 and DAISY 3 full-text full-audio books.

Romain.

Read the main topic related to this post
Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:36 am http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=75#p111 a question about MyStudioPC and SigtunaDAR3 http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=73#p108

by mycomputer_2008 (Posted Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:14 am)

Hello!
I have question about MyStudioPC and SigtunaDAR3, I heard that this two softwares can translate many tapes to mp3 files in short time,Because we have a lot of tapes which can play by recorder. But I don't know how to do this,So I want somedody to help me about this tech question,I am very thanks for your help!

Read the main topic related to this post
Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:14 am http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=73#p108 Newbie Needs Help http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=69#p107

by romain.deltour (Posted Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:19 am)

Hello Gordon,

Sorry for the late reply.
This error may come from either your TTS choking on a piece of text, or a bug in the Pipeline. Perhaps not a radical one, but certainly an ideological one:

- although there is refreshable braille, digital is a misnomer for the print braille production that has been discussed except for the state of the input file;
- braille books don't talk;
- and my understanding is that more than just traditional "books" are being considered for incorporation into the standard.

And that's only from the braille perspective. If the goal is to provide access to a fuller range of media, then it would seem to be an opportune moment to shed the talking book heritage for a more encompassing term.

I also don't see that the loss of DTBook or DTB would have much bearing beyond the more immediate group of developers and producers who currently create content. DAISY's capital is invested in the name DAISY. If you talk about DAISY or the "DAISY standard" or DAISY talking books anyone even remotely familiar with the technology will understand what you're talking about. If you talk to them about DTBook or DTBs you'll more likely get a blank stare.

Digital talking books will always be perhaps the most important aspect of DAISY (and will no doubt always be referred to as DAISY talking books), but why bind the standard so tightly to being a talking book standard by its name? If the goal is to be more than talking books, it would seem strange to continue to refer to it as such. This was the third released version. To keep the numbering scheme clear, we are going to rename this release 1.3.0 Versions released that fix bugs will be incremented, as in: 1.3.1 etc.

The beginning of phase two will lead to a second release, version 2. We will use the same approach, the first public beta will be 2.1 and increase incrementally until we reach the second official release.

We will be posting information about the features covered in the second release.

Read the main topic related to this post
Mon May 12, 2008 7:27 pm http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=66#p97 problems in installation of save as daisy add-in http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=65#p95

by MayuHamada (Posted Tue Jun 03, 2008 1:52 am)

Additional info from Johnvi is as follows:

what I did is to copy the folder named Daisy Translator Addin for Microsoft Word folder under the sonata. Then locate the template add-in of microsoft word. Mine is under c:\documents and settings-johnvi\application data\microsoft\templates and I pasted in there. Note your system may be different from my folder. Then I open my microsoft word, and these are the steps.
1. go to tools menu
2. arrow down to template add-in and press enter. You will be in a edit menu under templates tab. Try to tab and locate the list view. If you see the templates 2003 check this by pressing the space bar, and if you don't see this try to tab once and you will fall on add... button then press enter.
3. go to the list view You will see the folder named (daisy translator in microsoft word) and press enter.
4. you will see the file named templates 2003.dot press enter on this file.
5. all you have to do is to press tab ok button to accept the settings.

Read the main topic related to this post
Tue Jun 03, 2008 1:52 am http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=65#p95 Testing the save as DAISY plugin http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7#p93

by DAISY (Posted Fri Jun 06, 2008 2:44 am)

Most of the documentation was updated with the first release of the DAISY add-in on May 7, but some versions remain out there that imply that a full DAISY book is produced. Unfortunately, no adapters are provided to bridge the Pipeline calls to a Linux TTS engine, which makes it unusable on Linux as is.

The Pipeline neither provide a way for a user to feed existing audio files: the Pipeline is a non interactive authoring tool, and as far as I can tell there would be no straight automatic way to associate existing audio files to a text-only file set.
What you can currently do is to produce a DAISY 2.02 text-only fileset using the "DAISY 2.02 Text-Only Fileset Generator" script (in the category Creation>Advanced), and then narrate the audio using a production tool. I don't know if such a tool exist for Linux though.

The DAISY website has (non-exhaustive) lists of authoring tools and playback tools.

Note that the Pipeline itself is not a reader.

Finally, note that we'd be more than happy to assist anyone who'd volunteer to contribute a Linux TTS adapter for the Narrator!

HTH,
Romain.

Read the main topic related to this post
Wed Jun 04, 2008 8:09 am http://www.daisy.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=58#p83
