Amis RC1 and Windows 7
Hello Marisa:
I realise AMIS is not supported in Windows 7 yet.
Just to let you know Beta4 worked perfectly in Windows 7, but RC1 hangs on something.
I noticed Beta 4 was 18,884 kb but RC1 is only 12,338 kb.
The tutorial does not seem to install smoothly. The program loads but the icons are all gray in colour.
I tried installing the Jaws scripts seperately as you suggested to someone else
but it crashed with runtime error at 27:1274 out of range.
I have attached amisLog.txt from \ProgramData\AMIS\settings as amisLog-1.txt
there is a second amisLog.txt in \Users\Myname\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Amis\settings
attached as amisLog-2.txt
Thanking you in advance for all your help
I will supply any help I can from this end.
I will reinstall Beta4 and see what the logs look like.
Also RC1 installed perfectly in Windows XP on my laptop.

Re: Amis RC1 and Windows 7
Thank you very much for the report. I haven't tried Windows 7 myself yet, but it sounds like there is a good chance of getting AMIS to work on it.
As for installing the Jaws scripts, are you a Jaws user? Otherwise, the scripts installer will crash.
That AMIS beta 4 worked well and RC1 does not sounds suspiciously like another problem report I got, which turned out to be related to SAPI conflicts. Could you check something for me? In your Windows add/remove programs, do you see an entry for "sapi51redist"? If you remove it, does AMIS stop crashing?
Thanks
Marisa
Re: Amis RC1 and Windows 7
Hello Marisa:
First off my error on Jaws script I am not using Jaws, my goof up.
I reinstalled B4 and all worked fine and noticed sapi51redist in system.
Reinstalled RC1 overtop of B4 so sapi51redist still in system.
Results are in amisLog-3.txt ran to end but did not work.
Removed sapi51redist as per your suggestion and AMIS crashed.
Results are in amisLog-4.txt showing where AMIS stopped loading,
not surprising as no text to speech installed.
I also notice on all versions of AMIS the smaller_font.ico and slower.ico
do not show in color. RC1 adds bookmark_new.ico to the list of grayed icons.
All correct color icons are installed but program chooses to display those 3 only in gray.
If I can be of any assistance do not hesitate to ask.
Appreciate all the work you are doing on this very useful project
Good Luck
Thank you in advance

Re: Amis RC1 and Windows 7
Thanks for testing my theory. I wonder what version of SAPI comes with Windows 7?
The reason you have sapi51redist is that AMIS beta 4 installed it no matter if you needed it or not. This bug in our installer was fixed for RC1; however, beta 4's installation of sapi51redist still lingers (I'm trying to figure out how to programmatically get rid of it).
Another user's log files and bug report reminded me of yours because AMIS was crashing during its own initialization (as opposed to crashing during book playback), which likely means something is wrong with the underlying components, or exiting abruptly.
I still think it might be some sort of SAPI conflict, or maybe DirectX. Do you have any other assistive software installed?
I will read more about Windows 7. I might even have a copy somewhere in my MSDN subscription.
As for the grayed-out buttons, small font and speed-down are disabled until you make the font larger or speed up. That is to say, AMIS won't decrease font size or slow down playback beyond the size/rate of the default book presentation.
The grayed-out bookmark button I am not sure of. What book were you reading (that is, if you did manage to open a book in RC1; else it is grayed-out because no book is open and there is nothing to bookmark)? If the book has no UID (required by the DAISY standard), then bookmarking is disabled.

Re: Amis RC1 and Windows 7
Hello Marisa:
Once again I forgot to mention something. I am using Windows 7 64-bit
and I'm willing to bet that is the problem.
Windows 7 has the same speech engine as Windows Vista sapi 5.3.10812
and uses the one located at \Windows\System32\Speech\Common\sapi.dll
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms723627%28VS.85%29.aspx
Windows 7 also changed to DirectX 11 according to dxdiag.exe which shows version 6.1.7000.0
Thus I guess RC1 does not work with Vista either. I have a nephew with Vista and will have
him check it out for me.
If you would like me to test something out do not hesitate to ask.
I see now that the navigation buttons are grayed out until used, not intuitive, but a
good feature once you realize how it works giving at a glance info that one is in
slowest speed and smallest font. Maybe just add note to User Guide under toolbar.
Thanks for your replies and hope you can get AMIS working in Vista and upcoming Windows 7.
I believe the next OS will be extremely popular, It seems to work well for me.
Thanks

Re: Amis RC1 and Windows 7
Maybe the problem is with DirectX 11. I know that 10, which ships with Vista, is supposedly 100% backwards-compatible, but I'm not sure about version 11.
If you have a chance, maybe you could see if the Ambulant SMIL player works on Windows 7 (http://ambulantplayer.org/Download200.shtml). AMIS embeds Ambulant, so if Ambulant does not work, that would give us some clues.
AMIS usually works with Vista, though we are still working through a few recent bug reports. Let me know if your nephew has any luck (good or bad) with Vista -- more feedback is always welcome.
Thanks
Marisa
Re: Amis RC1 and Windows 7
Hello Marisa
Yes, I installed Ambulant SMIL player 2.01 and all the demos played perfectly in it.
My nephew installed AMIS on Vista 64-bit and he said he thought it worked properly,
he figures his Creative Labs audio card was the problem not AMIS.
I see Vista will have DirectX 11 later this year, probably when Windows 7 releases.
I tried AMIS using compatiblilty mode for Vista and XP sp2 neither loaded.
Latest install of RC1 shows ERROR: CANNOT PLAY all the mp3 files [audio_playerX::play]
I believe this means DirectX 11 is the culprit with AMIS.
Also Visual C++ Runtime: This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
I reported inablility to run this program to Microsoft, saying I thought it was DirectX 11 related.
Thanks again
Al
Thanks for the report. This
Thanks for the report. This sort of testing is valuable because it reveals hardware issues that don't appear in my own testing. Could you send me the log file from this run of AMIS where the audio player reports problems playing the mp3 files?
