Obi 1.1 RC1 is now available
Dear all,
Obi 1.1 RC was released on July 24, 2009.
It comes with the following new features and improvements:
Compatibility with previous standard
Obi has been extended to incorporate the DAISY 2.02 standard. Projects can now also be exported to a DTB that conforms to the DAISY 2.02 standard, validated, and encoded to MP3.
New Tools and Utilities
Fileset renamer is a new tool that enables Obi users to rename the file sets of DTB to suit your requirements.
A new utility, DTB Merger, is distributed with this release. It enables users to merge two or more DTBs into a single book. For help, users can press F1 after starting DTB Merger.
Enhancements
The Auto Save command now saves the modifications to a backup file, thereby improving the chances of recovering the project in case problems occur.
Users can now quickly navigate to a specific page in the project or even to a phrase in a section. The attributes of a page phrase can also be changed by using the Phrase properties dialog.
Now it is possible to switch between languages in the same application. The language needs to be changed in the User profile preferences tab of the Preferences dialog and the Obi program restarted. Please note that this language switch is currently functional only for two languages (English “en-US” and Hindi “hi-IN”).
The Obi 1.1 RC release features DAISY 2.02 export as the main enhancement. We encourage Obi users to export files to DAISY 2.02 and send our developers bug reports if the exported book will not play in your player or you have any other concerns. Obi is available for download at the Obi development site:

We would like to thank all the contributors for their support.

Latest Release
Thanks guys for your hard work! I am watching with interest your progress, but before we can use as our DAISY Production tool we will need two more features. One I see you have already got in mind: Import from a DAISY DTB 2.02 the second is my biggest bugbear with Obi and maybe I've missed something! Automatic Phrase detection. Yes I know this isn't a requirement of a DTB but is very useful for readers as if they didn't quite hear the last sentence they can easily press the rewind once and hear it again. could you let me know how I go about creating a Spanish version now we are at a stable version etc.
Thanks
Paul
There is an "apply phrase
There is an "apply phrase detection" function, which although not necessarily 'automatic', works quite well.
Click on the phrase, click "phrases" in the main toolbar and scroll to "apply phrase detection".
As well, there is an auto phrase split upon importing .wav files, however the minimum phrase size is only 1 minute. Would be good if it could be 30 seconds.
Re:latest release
Dear Paul,
Yes, you are right, import from DTBs is already in our plans.
Regarding live phrase detection, I understand that this is a desirable feature but we have not decided a time line for it. Till then you can apply phrase detection on an existing phrase as already mentioned by ixnay.
And regarding listening last sentece by using rewind, I will like to understand better, do you want to listen the last sentence just after recording or is this related to live phrase detection?
For localization, we will be using LION ( the tool that was developed for localization of AMIS). But we yet need to adapt it more for Obi. Advantage of using LION is that we will be able to localize through it remotely.

Hi Aveneesh, The listening to
Hi Aveneesh,
The listening to the last sentence was refering to the Reader/Listener listening to the final DTB using their hardware/software player.
Thanks for your help guys I will try out the phrase detection!
Do let me know when LION is ready from Localising the software.
Thanks
Paul
Yes, Phrase Detection works
Yes, Phrase Detection works well!
Just noticed in the metadata 'obi:xukversion' = xuk/obi;beta should this be updated to 1.1?
thanks
Paul
Re: phrase detection works
Dear Pawl,
Thanks for pointing this out. This metadata will be updated in final 1.1 release. I think we can continue with this in release candadate.

Sorry showing my ignorance
Sorry showing my ignorance about RCs etc.
But I am disappointed in the phrase detection as after about a minute or so it seems to start slipping in it's calculations. the split gets later and later until within 10 minutes the gap is at the start of the phrase not the end! Maybe something is being rounded up I don't know but it makes it difficult to work with. Maybe if I set the import time to 2 minutes then phrase detect that, but of course this will take more time to complete each section.
Comments?
Paul
Re: Split and Phrase detection
Dear Pawl,
If I understand it right, you are first importing audio file and using split check box for splitting it into phrases of 10minutes. And after you get some phrases ( each of 10 minutes ) then you apply phrase detection on each of them.
If you are finding phrase detector working fine on first 2 to 3 minutes and are finding some miss-alignment in later part of detection then I will also like to know if the complete 10 minutes of audio has audio with the same intensity
If audio is of same intensity and still later part of audio is facing imss-alignment then it needs a fix from our side.

Yes that is correct! That is
Yes that is correct! That is what is happening. I can email you a screen image to illustrate it if you like?
Thanks
Paul
Re: Phrase detection for long phrases
Dear Pawl,
Yes, we are able to see that miss-alignment happening for long phrases. There is no need of image, we got some idea about source of error which give rise to this miss-alignment in later part of long phrase.
thanks
