Running AMIS when running as a restricted user on windows xp
Hi all,
I tried running AMIS while I was logged on as a restricted user on Windows XP professional. I was told that the visual C++ runtime had been asked to terminate in an unusual way.
I then logged back on as a user who had administrative credentials and gave full control to the amis folder under the "documents and settings"\"all users" folder as well as the amis folder under the "program files" folder. I logged out and then logged in as the restricted user. Amis ran without a hitch.
What gives? Why does AMIS seemm to require administrative access to run? We need to be careful about this since more and more users will be running without administrator rights in the near future.

Thanks for reporting this; it is definitely a bug. All the settings and logging for AMIS were moved to the Windows "Documents and Settings" directory so that administrative access would not be required. I will look into this.
What exactly were your restricted user settings?

Re: Running AMIS when running as a restricted user on windows xp
By the way, this has been fixed in AMIS RC2 (due in a few weeks). The problem was that if the administrator installs AMIS, then the AMIS settings files are only write-able by the administrator and not by a restricted user. This is counter-intuitive to what I first read about the Windows Application Data directory under "All Users", which seems like it should be write-able by, well, "All Users". Guess not.
The test I ran was to install AMIS as the admin, and then log in as a restricted user and use AMIS. Does this sound like the same scenario as you were having problems with?
Thanks

Marisa,
This is exactly what I did. I installed amis as an administrator and then created a limited user. I logged in as the limited user and then tried to run amis.
Many thanks in advance for the fix and also thanks for your lucid explanation of why this bug occured.

Hello,
The problem should the fixed in AMIS RC2, which is not yet available. If you want to workaround the problem temporarily, you can give all users permission to write to the AMIS settings folder, which is found here:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AMIS\settings
Windows Vista:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\AMIS\settings\
Be sure to recursively set the permissions so that the subfolders are also affected.
Let me know if this works.
