Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation

Hi,
I've tried to install Obi RC3 on four XP (working ok on Vista!) machines all have SP3 and I belive SP2 had DirectX 9.0c as part of it. DXDiag confirms the version, but Obi setup says I don't have DirectX 9 c managed - and I don't understand what managed is - anyway go to microsoft site via installation link and runs DXSetup but failes when trying to download the files! Used DirectX redistributable says Finished no files needed, So I am presuming is up-to-date? Obi crashes with what looks like can't access DirectX etc. What do I try next? Same thing on 4 different XP machines! Vista is fine!
Thanks
Paul

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Just tried to update Vista computer to Obi RC3 and getting error 2869 near end of installation!
On DirectX problem Microsoft confirms Vista comes with DirectX 10 which cannot be downgraded and is infact DirectX 9.0c + new Video driver for Vista compatibility etc. So I am confused on the advise to install DirectX 9 c managed on Vista!

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Dear paul,
Obi will need DirectX 9c ( managed ) on vista also. The reason is the same as message seen by you. DirectX 10 is not completely backward compatible with DirectX 9.0c and DirectX 10 do not work on windows XP.
rectX 9.0c works on both XP and vista.
So, you can install DirectX 9.0c ( managed ) on both of operating systems.

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Dear Paul,
Windows XP 2 comes with a version of DirectX 9 c. But this version is not enough for Obi.
You will need to install DirectX 9.0 c ( managed ) explicitly on windows XP.
And managed here means DirectX for managed code i.e. dotnet code. We need it because Obi is made on dotnet platform.

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Thanks! I've managed to get at least one of the XP SP3 machine working using the DirectX November 2008 redist link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=886acb56-c91a-4a8e-8bb8-9f20f1244a8e&DisplayLang=en which is a complete download as the web installer that the installation program point to doesn't work for me and I have seen of Microsoft forums others having trouble with the DirectX web installer! So hope this hels and others with same problem as me!
But Vista still comes up with error on Obi RC3 install even with this DirectX version installed!
Any more ideas?
Paul
Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
hello again,
We will need some more information regarding this problem.
1. Version of vista used. for example we have vista home premium and vista home basic on our machines.
2. Was installation of DirectX and Obi RC3 done on administrator.
3. Did Obi and directX worked on this machine earlier to Obi RC3.
4. When does this problem arise, during installation or after installation or as soon as you start Obi.
If this error mesage come at time Obi is started then please locate file "ObiStartupError.txt" in Obi's installation directory which should be by default at.
C:\program files\The Urakawa Project\Obi RC3
and send its contents to us.

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Ok,
I am using Vista Business!
All installed using Admin rights.
This occurs after installed DirectX as above for XP, which works o.k.
Had Obi RC1 installed and was working without needing DirectX 9.0c managed installed.
Error is at 95% of install of Obi.
I can even see all the files before the error and then quites and removes all the files again, leaving a tmp file.
I think I need to do a restart!
Let you know how I get on!

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Hi,
I'm afraid that made no difference and was quite painful!
Anyway done now!
Any suggestions?

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Dear Paul,
This is somewhat confusing for me because there is no difference between RC1 and RC3 with respect to directX and Obi installer.
That part has not been touched at all.
Will try to investegate it further and then come back to you. Meanwhile it would be nice if you can tell us if there is something changed on your machine between RC1 and RC3. Any software installation / update?

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Dear Paul,
The problem that you are facing seems to be generated by insufficiency of rights only. I had myself installed Obi on Windows Vista and was facing the similar kind of problem when i was not logged in as administrator. Once i logged in as administrator, the installation was successful. You can also try installing Obi RC3 on a fresh machine and see if you are facing similar kind of problem. For your convenience here is a link that will guide you through the installation of Obi on Vista: https://daisy-trac.cvsdude.com/obi/wiki ... on%20vista

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Thank you by using the cmd in Start Programs and right clicking on this then selecting Run as Administrator. Then running the setup.msi from the command line etc. I got it installed properly!
Is there not an easier solution for future installs? First time I've ever had to do that for a program to work?
Also is there a way to have continuous playback, for proof-reading etc.?
Thanks
Paul
Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Sorry! Found it Ctrl+Shift+Space Play all.

Re: Obi XP SP3 DirectX installation
Dear Paul,
Nice to know that it worked!
The problem generally arise on vista if .msi file is used for installation but things work smoothly when installation is carried from .exe file. We will be providing a better installer for final version of Obi but for test versions, we felt that this is not a big issue as we will expect sufficiently skilled people like you to pick up Obi in RC stage.
On a side note, vista sometimes popup up some behaviour somewhat strange for us mostly due to higher security etc. Hopefully we will be able to overcome these things soon.

Better avoid using SP3
