New to DAISY: How to create using open source solutions

in

As any newcomer would agree, the amount of information on this site is encyclopedic. For someone who is not familiar with the formats, the process of getting anything done without weeks and months of reading, is incredibly overwhelming. Where can I find and read one post that outlines the process to create an indexed digital talking book using open source solutions? I'm not looking for someone to do the work for me, and I don't mind reading the documentation to configure the needed software to create my project. I have a CD with all the MP3 files organized by section and chapter and I need to create a digital audio book compatible with the NLS digital reading machine, victor stream, etc. the process has to be relatively simple, once someone knows what they are doing, but I just can't figure it out by sifting through all the information available. An outline would be helpful. edit: I use Linux, but can install Windows if really needed. Thanks in advance,

Importing audio

Hi sreph45, If you have no intentions of producing a full text - full audio book, Tobi would do the trick. What you will get is a book with headings (and possibly pagenumbers) and full audio. - download OBI and install, read help manual, then start typing the headings for sections and chapters and import the appropriate audio (or the other way round...) - download the DAISY Pipeline and install, then take exported Tobi book (the xml part which we like to call DTBook or DAISY xml) load it onto the pipeline and convert it to the format most appropriate to your purposes. I would recommend Windows, but that only because I'm running it...and a lot of other task specific and non-DAISY software only lives there. im equally as bamboozled by daisy - it seems like you need to read and read and research just to get a simple thing going - How do I import audio into Tobi? I downloaded it and i dont see any way of doing this. What I thought would be childs play in burning audio into a daisy cd format is proving to be a major frustration for me right now... Can anyone fill in the missing links?? What am i doing wrong here? I've tried save as from audacity into Pipeline - it errors out with some file mismatch message I've tried Book wizard producer and it doesnt seem to compile?? Ive now downloaded Tobi and as far as I can see I cannot see any way to IMPORT audio. Like the original poster I don't have a massive amount of time to trowl through documentations and forums - just want a quick easy solution.. Many thanks..

Tobi

Dear deedub, Tobi is an authoring tool for full-text full-audio digital talking books. Once a DTBOOK document is loaded in Tobi, you can click the text you want to attach audio to, then simply use CTRL-i (menu "audio"->"Insert audio file", or the third button on the bottom toolbar) to import MP3 or WAV clips. From there you can edit the audio data using the waveform display, select audio, delete, copy/cut/paste, record, or even insert another audio file. Tobi is currently in beta state so your feedback is most welcome. More information is available on the website: http://daisy.trac.cvsdude.com/tobi/wiki/Beta Kind regards, Daniel

Tobi is now in beta

Hello ! The beta testing phase for Tobi has now started and we are about to send a public announcement. One way to use Tobi is to create a DTBOOK text document using Microsoft Word or Open Office with their "Save As DAISY" plugins. Then simply open the ".xml" file from Tobi and start adding audio using human narration or pre-recorded audio clips. More information here: http://daisy.trac.cvsdude.com/tobi Regards, Daniel
