TOC and <pagenum>

Hello,

I have manually tagged pages in a word document using the (Page number DAISY) style. When creating a table of contents (TOC), the page numbers referred are not the ones but the word's logical page numbering, as expected.

However, isn't that ambiguous for the reader? i.e. first he/she listens that Chapter 1 is in page 10 (based on TOC) but when reading he/she figures out that Chapter 1 is in page 8, according to the DAISY page numbering. Is there another way to do it?

Should TOC be totally removed from the XML book since the heading structure is automatically available to the reader in any DAISY player? What is the most right approach for TOC when converting a book to a DAISY version?

Thank you,
Apostolos

...dear Apostolos, in what you stated in your last paragraph. The navigation tree serves as the (much better) table of contents, since you just have to click it and arrive at the chapter you were looking for. But then you can also navigate by page numbers... If you want to have page number references in the table of contents, then just don't mark them as page numbers but the same as the chapter heading they refer to. Regards Olaf

Dear Apostolos, When page numbers are typed and marked with Page Number (DAISY) style it is important to make sure that the page number treatment is set to custom. In the ACCESSIBILITY ribbon click on the SETTINGS button. Then select the CUSTOM radio button and click OK. Now translate the document. Save AS DAISY will not pick up the WORD page numbering now, instead the pages you have marked up will be used in the output XML and DAISY book. Let us know the outcome. Prashant

Oh, I see the contradiction. We use custom page numbers only when the source is a print document. In such cases when the content is digitized the MS Word pagination does not match that of the print source. Use of DAISY page styles ensures correct page marking in the DAISY output. When the file has a MS WORD generated TOC then we use automatic page numbering for conversion to DAISY. This way the page numbers mentioned in the TOC actually contains the mentioned chapter. Also do not forget to use the BODYMATTER style after the TOC. There is an article on treatment of TOC in DAISYpedia.

Hello,

The problem is not only with scanned printed documents, but also with PDF that are converted to DOC before being converted to DAISY, due to the manual processing that it takes to make it DAISY-compatible.

Thank you,
Apostolos
