D

DAISY
Acronym for Digital Accessible Information SYstem.
DAISY Import
The process by which an existing DAISY 2.0 or DAISY 2.02 project is brought into MyStudio PC for editing. It can also be used to combine several projects into one single project. DAISY Import can be used with NCC type books only.
Decibel
A reference for the measurement of sound energy. The minimum change in volume that the human ear can perceive. Named after Alexander Graham Bell. A decibel is 1/10th of a Bell.
Distribution Copy
A distribution copy is a copy of a DTB that is intended for use with a DAISY reading system. Normally compression has been applied to reduce the size of the DTB to make it fit on a single CD-ROM. A distribution copy only contains DAISY file sets. In MyStudio PC Distribution copies are written to CD from within MyStudio PC (external CD writing software is not required).
Distribution Master
A distribution master is a copy of a DTB that is intended for use with a DAISY reading system. Normally compression is applied to reduce the size of the DTB so that it will fit onto a single medium, e.g. a CD-ROM. A distribution master may span multiple CDs.
Document
In this context, a type of file containing textual information intended for human retrieval. Examples of document files are Microsoft WORD Documents, XHTML Documents, and text documents.
DTB
Acronym for Digital Talking Book. DAISY books are often referred to as DAISY DTBs.
Dual reinforcement
Dual reinforcement describes a learning process during which the end user simultaneously receives the same information through two senses. For example, in a DAISY DTB the text is highlighted on the screen as the audio is being played out. The person sees and hears the information simultaneously. For a person with low vision or a person with dyslexia this reinforcement can be very important.
Dublin Core
The Dublin Metadata Core Element Set is a set of 13 metadata elements. These metadata elements facilitate the discovery of document-like objects in a networked environment such as the Internet.
Dynamic Range
The difference between the highest and the lowest amplitude that can be represented by the system. To make use of the excellent dynamic range of digital recording, signal input levels should be kept close to digital maximum. This will lower the general noise floor, and it will also reduce quantization noise.
