- PCM
- Acronym for Pulse Code Modulation, a sampling technique for digitizing analog signals, especially audio signals. PCM samples the signal 8000 times a second; each sample is represented by 8 bits for a total of 64 Kbps. There are two standards for coding the sample level. The Mu-Law standard is used in North America and Japan while the A-Law standard is use in most other countries.
- Peak Level
- The amplitude of the highest point in the recording expressed in dB. In the digital domain, 0 dB is the same as digital maximum (often called 0dBFS, "full scale"). The digital peak level cannot exceed 0 dBFS.
- Phrase
- DAISY production tools can automatically analyze the audio input during
a recording session, and divide the audio into "phrases" based
on pauses (periods of silence) in the narration. These phrases facilitate
the recording process for the producer and enhance navigation for the end
user.
- Phrase List
- In MyStudio PC the Phrase List displays phrase list information such as phrase number, length, pause information, group information, page information, mark information and audio file information.
- PNG
- Acronym for Portable Network Graphics, and pronounced "ping", a bit-mapped graphics format similar to GIF. PNG was approved as a standard by the World Wide Web consortium to replace GIF because GIF uses a patented data compression algorithm. In contrast, PNG is completely patent- and license- free. .
