How to Hear and Check Spelling in DAISY Books

Original Author(s): Prashant Ranjan Verma

It is possible to hear the spelling of words in full-text / full-audio and text-only DAISY books. In full-text / full-audio book both the text and the audio are present and can be synchronized so the reader can listen to human narration. In text-only DAISY books users can hear the text-to-speech voice to determine spelling, punctuation, and other information that may not be clearly conveyed through the narrated audio. On dedicated hardware DAISY readers like the Victor Reader Stream and the Plextalk Pocket, the in-built text-to-speech (TTS) voice can be used to assist in navigating the text by headings, pages, lines, words as well as characters.

On the computer and mobile platforms, the screen reading software can be used to read and hear the spelling. You need to use the "text reading mode" instead of "playing" the DAISY book.

The TOC-only or audio-only DAISY books do not contain any text and therefore it is not possible to check the spelling of words in these types of DAISY books.

Here are few tips for reading and hearing the spelling of words in popular DAISY reading tools on the Windows platform. The keystrokes of JAWS and NVDA, two popular screen readers have been mentioned.

Make sure JAWS or NVDA is running and it is using a TTS voice that can speak the language of the DAISY book. For example, if the book is in Hindi, then Hindi TTS should be configured with the screen reader.
